&lt;p&gt;Tony serves as the Vice President of Membership in our South Florida Chapter and leader of the Membership Grassroots initiative. &amp;nbsp;Tony was one of five finalists from the Southeast Region, including Tim Dewey and David Chism of HDI Atlanta, John Peirce of HDI Raleigh, and Cay Robertson of HDI Skyway.&amp;nbsp;The talent and quality of officers in the SE region nominated made this a very close vote.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The award recognizes Tony's dedication and contributions to the local, regional and national HDI Chapters. Tony's peers among the more than 80 Chapter Officers from eleven local chapters nominated the top five candidates and selected Tony from among the "best of the best for 2011".&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

Sanova Group and Eddie Vidal from the&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://miami.edu/it/" target="_blank"&gt;University of Miami&lt;/a&gt; presented on topics covering Communications Strategies, People, Performance and Services. Albert presented strategies to improve employee performance and Eddie shared communication policies and processes to improve services to customer and organizations. According to meeting surveys, both presentations were well received by attendees and a number tools and templates were key takeaways for attendees to use in their organizations.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Over 35 IT professionals from South Florida attended this event taking advantage of membership promotion discounts. The promotion to increase HDI membership was successful with twelve new registrations. Attendees who were members received an added bonus with the raffle of an Intermediate ITIL Lifecycle or Capability course, donated by &lt;a href="http://www.itsmacademy.com/StoreFront.bok" target="_blank"&gt;ITSM Academy&lt;/a&gt;. In addition, lunch was served courtesy of &lt;a href="http://www.teksystems.com/" target="_blank"&gt;TEK Systems&lt;/a&gt;.

A large reason for this success has been the valuable input provided by its VP of Membership and Supervisor, I/S Configuration Management for Carnival Cruise Lines, Antonio Di Perna. This past December, Antonio Di Perna was awarded the 1st Annual HDI South Florida Officer of the Year. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;img alt="" style="float: right;border: 0px solid;" src="/images/blog_images/2011LocalOfficerAward_204x307.jpg" /&gt;Recently the&amp;nbsp;South Florida HDI Local Chapter earned Platinum Circle of Excellence Recognition, ranked #4 out of 60 and was one of only 11 chapters to earn this recognition. This recognition is based on chapters meeting certain benchmarks used to measure member growth, management of chapter policies and procedures, education, career development, meetings, special events, and contributions to the IT community.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Tony was instrumental in the creation of HDI&amp;rsquo;s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database, unveiled at the HDI Local Chapter Summit in Colorado Springs last June 2010. Prior to the creation of the CRM, HDI provided its local chapters monthly membership reports. Today, all chapters can access their member list online and in real-time. Tony also developed South Florida&amp;rsquo;s Marketing and Communications campaign which has been imitated by numerous chapters and National HDI Headquarters. He currently chairs the Grassroots quarterly conference calls for all VP of Membership throughout the United States.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Tony stepped up to fill in when the VP of Communications resigned. He managed the successful release of the chapters&amp;rsquo; quarterly newsletter. In addition, he created the templates currently used for all email meeting communication campaigns. Tony&amp;rsquo;s attitude and commitment make him a valuable asset to the HDI community. The South Florida HDI Local Chapter is lucky to have him on our team and well deserving of the Officer of the Year award.&lt;/p&gt;

At the event, Shawn Genoway from&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://www.citrix.com/lang/English/home.asp" target="_blank"&gt;Citrix Systems&lt;/a&gt; introduced and shared details regarding the BYOC Program. This progressive computing model empowers workers to purchase their own computer to bring to work, while providing them with the tools to connect to their office applications via web portal access, VPN or Citrix receivers. Shawn&amp;rsquo;s overview was comprehensive and enlightening. &lt;br /&gt;

Over 40 IT professionals from South Florida attended this event and a membership drive to increase HDI membership was successful with nine new registrations. Attendees who were members received an added bonus with the raffle of a Kindle, donated by &lt;a href="http://www.kaseya.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Kaseya&lt;/a&gt;, a Platinum Sponsor of South Florida HDI.&lt;br /&gt;

Officers from sixty chapters throughout the United States and Canada come to celebrate success stories, learn from each other and work together to develop the skills needed to run their local chapters like a business. This year approximately 1/3 of the 105 officers at Summit were first time attendees.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The South Florida HDI Chapter began this year's journey on Wednesday, June 1st flying to Atlanta to pick up a few officers from the Atlanta chapter.   Our group consisted of South Florida HDI Officers Eddie Vidal (President) and Tony DiPerna (VP Membership); and Atlanta Chapter Officers David Chism (President), Jamie Stannard (VP Special Events), and outgoing HDI National Member Advisory Board (MAB) chair Darien Chimoff. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The conference kicked off early Friday morning with a Member Advisory Board (MAB) meeting focused on planning for the next 12 months.  During the meeting, the MAB agreed in principle to establish regional bank accounts, opening the door for each region to plan long term and budget for regional events instead of reaching out for funding on a per event basis.  The official start to the Summit was at 1 PM but nothing beats an early start by having lunch at Judge Baldwins and renewing friendships. During this time you are required to hug other officers from around the country, quickly reducing any personal space issues that may exist. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This year's Summit theme was "Charting Your Course" hosted by your Cruise Director and new MAB chair, Dana Olson.  The Summit started with an introduction to the HDI staff who work hard throughout the year to help officers run successful local chapters.  The highlight of the day was the "Great Treasure Hunt of 2011" hosted by Captain Jack Sparrow (aka Brandon Caudle) and the wench, Laurette Ayers.  We also learned about the Analyst of the Year and the new Desktop Support Technician annual award sponsored by Robert Half Technology.  The day concluded with updates on key initiatives, including the upcoming release of the new HDI website and ecommerce platform. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After hours fun included a tour of the HDI offices, appetizers and the opportunity for HDI Officers and staff to network.  After the tour, regional groups departed for some additional networking while karaoke singing, bowling and even some dancing. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The following day Saturday started at 7:30 AM with breakfast breakouts by officer tenure and "Cheers to Officers".  Congratulations to the Arizona chapter for winning the "Rising Star" award, Sacramento Chapter for the "Ducks in a Row" award, a New Award, &amp;ldquo;Taking the First Steps&amp;rdquo; to John Piece from the Raleigh TriHDI Chapter and the "Rock of our Foundation" Award to Sandy Seroskie. Our HDI mother/hostess Sophie Klossner did an awesome job of presenting the awards and speaking from the heart while putting a few tears in our eyes. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Final remarks from our outgoing MAB chair and the passing of the gavel to the new chair were part of the morning highlights.  During lunch each region dined and strategized together. Next on the agenda were breakout sessions to help define the membership "persona's" and how to market to them.  The afternoon closed out with an Expert Panel session with the HDI management team of Craig Baxter Global Brand Director, Sophie Klossner Director of HDI Membership, Rick Joslin Executive Director of Certification and Training, Chris Farver Principal Consultant for BMC and Cinda Daly Director of Business Content of HDI.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When the sun went down it was time to celebrate. This year's Summit party was at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. The view from the top was spectacular, the food was amazing and once again the officers had a fabulous time.    True to tradition, HDI shows it always hosts a great party with music, dancing and karaoke.  After the party we headed over to Blondie&amp;rsquo;s, where fellow officers continued sweating off a few pounds on the dance floor.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Early Sunday, the morning network breakfast found a few people missing due to early departures for home.  After breakfast, we viewed the fantastic video montage edited and directed by Chris Farver.   Two other breakout sessions rounded out the morning before the closing comments from Dana, Sophie and Craig.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Summit 2011 was the third Summit the South Florida chapter attended.  I continue to be impressed and humbled by the talented, passionate, friendly and good hearted people I meet every year. The Summit allows our officers to learn from more established chapters and to recognize the hard work and great success our South Florida board has achieved in only 2 1/2 years.   As an officer with HDI my life has been enriched in so many ways.  I have built meaningful friendships, learned the skills to run our local chapter like a business, connected with industry leaders, and enhanced my talents as an IT professional.  I'm able to try new and exciting things and have brought it all back to my organization where I am an IT Service Manager at the University of Miami.    My passion for learning has sky rocketed and it feels great to give back in so many ways. One of the many things I have learned as an officer and a member of HDI is to give good hugs.  HDI has trademarked the HUG which is a skill I can take and put to good use with my family and friends.
